Academic misconduct procedures
Understand what happens if a marker has reason to believe that there is an issue with the academic integrity of a piece of work.
Educative Measures Procedure
This process may be used when there has been a first and minor breach of academic integrity which shows a need for improvement in skills such as paraphrasing, referencing, or meeting scholarly standards. The main goal of this approach is to educate students about academic integrity and the necessary skills needed to maintain this in their work.

Academic Misconduct Procedure
This process may be used for a breach of the academic integrity expectations noted in the Academic Integrity Policy for Students, if the matter does not meet the criteria for an Educative Measures Procedure.
If an issue is addressed using the academic misconduct procedures, then the student will receive a written notification which outlines what the issue is and invites them to attend a meeting to discuss this. Students are encouraged to bring a support person to the meeting and may wish to engage VUWSA advocacy services.
If it is determined that academic misconduct has occurred, penalties may be applied. These can include both educative measures and further penalties which are detailed in the Student Conduct Statute, specifically under 7.2.
If it is determined that an issue should be addressed as serious academic misconduct, the student will be notified of the issue in writing and advised of the next steps in the process.

Students can reach out to the VUWSA advocacy service for advice and support in navigating any academic integrity process. This is free of charge, whether they are a member of VUWSA or not.
Discussions of academic integrity breaches can be a stressful time for students, and students may wish to seek support services via Mauri Ora, Student Health and Counselling.
Students are encouraged to seek support from other areas of the University via Student Support Services.
