Security is a shared responsibility

Campus Security ensures a safe and secure environment for student and staff on campus, but there are some easy things you can do for yourself.

Look after your belongings

The University has many areas that are open public places, such as the Hub or the Library. These provide opportunities for theft while you are away from your desk or not looking.

Here are some things you can do to prevent the loss of personal items.

  • Do not leave your bag, laptop, phone or personal items unattended if dashing to get a coffee or a snack. Take them with you or leave them with a friend.
  • Keep your bags and valuables in sight or in contact with your body.
  • Turn on your electronic device tracking app, for example, “Find my iPhone”.
  • Don’t leave your wallet lying around.
  • Cyclists can invest in a good quality lock, such as a “D” lock. Have a photo of your bike, model and type. This helps if it does get stolen. Register your bike on Project 529, a free service that alerts users to stolen bikes and helps return them to the owners if found.
  • If you ride a scooter or motorbike, park it in one of the designated motorbike parks, use a good quality lock and store your gear in one of the many lockers around campus.
  • Report any theft to Campus Security as soon as possible, and file a Police 105 (ten-five) report.

Look out for your own safety

  • Be aware of your surroundings. If you see something suspicious, report it in real-time by phoning Campus Security, 0800 842 8888 or as soon as possible after, by email to security@vuw.ac.nz.
  • Walk briskly and confidently, sticking to well-lit pathways. Be aware of your increased vulnerability when wearing headphones.
  • If you plan to be on campus late at night studying, ensure that you inform your friends, flatmates or family of where you are and when you can be expected home.
  • If you receive nuisance or abusive calls, don’t speak to the caller. Hang up and report the call to the Police using a 105 (ten-five) report.
  • Never hesitate to call Campus Security for help—0800 842 8888.
