Improving student experience
We want to ensure all students have a great experience at Te Herenga Waka—Victoria University of Wellington.
Student surveys
Each year, we ask students to complete online surveys to give feedback about their experiences at university. The results guide our decision making, helping to ensure students have a great experience during their studies.
In previous years, student surveys helped us to:
- demonstrate the importance of flexible study
- improve our orientation programme
- enhance workshops
- signal which services require more support
- indicate a need to strengthen our enrolment process.
They also let us know what we’re doing well
“It's been a great experience so far. All the departments have helped in a great way - starting from International Support to the Faculty. Everyone is welcoming and it makes the University a great place to be at!”—Respondent, Getting Started Survey April 2023.
When do we seek student feedback?
It’s important to us that students have a positive experience from enrolment to graduation. For this reason, we survey students across different stages of the student journey.

Student Voice—Have Your Say Survey
The Student Voice—Have Your Say survey has been completed this year.
The survey sets out to capture our students’ impressions of their university experience so far this year, as well as asking about various aspects related to student life—academic and social experiences, learning within and outside the classroom, interaction with peers, managing time, services and spaces, technology, sustainability, pastoral care, and overall student wellbeing.

The YOU Student Wellbeing Survey
The 2023 YOU Student Wellbeing Survey is a long-term project, which aims to understand more about how student experiences interact with their wellbeing. To do this, we are reaching out to students twice a year for each year they study at Te Herenga Waka—Victoria University of Wellington.
Waves 6 and 8 of the survey were sent to third- and fourth-year undergraduate students on Monday 11 September 2023. The survey period has now closed.
It is important for us to understand how your wellbeing impacts your studies. Please refer to student services if you need any additional support.
Insights from the survey will be used to inform the University’s learning environment and support services.
If you have any questions, please email studentsurvey@vuw.ac.nz
Graduate Destinations Survey
The purpose of the Graduate Destinations Survey is to understand the types of employment, or further study opportunities, graduates may take up after completing their qualifications. It takes place in Trimester 2 each year and goes out to graduates who completed their studies between the beginning of July the previous year and the end of June in the current year.
