Set up your student account

Get your student account set up before you start your studies—find your username, set your password, and update your preferred email and other contact details.

Confirm your enrolment

Before the start of your first trimester, make sure that you've completed the enrolment process by accepting your Enrolment Agreement. We'll then send you a Confirmation of Study, which will contain:

  • confirmation of your enrolled courses for the academic year
  • your student username (in the top right-hand corner).

Student username and email

You’ll use your student username or student email address to access student IT services, including:

  • Pūaha, our online portal where you'll find services, support, and tools for your studies
  • Nuku, our online learning environment where you'll find course notes and assignments
  • computers and printers on campus.

Finding your username

You can find your username in the top right-hand corner of your Confirmation of Study, which is last step in the enrolment process.

Your student username will typically be the first six characters of your last name plus the first four characters of your first name. In some cases, we’ll need to add a number to generate a unique username for you.

Your student email address will be your username followed by ‘@myvuw.ac.nz’. This email account is sometimes referred to as a 'my vuw' account.

For example, if your name is Joanna Bloggs:

  • your student username will be bloggsjoan
  • your student email address will be bloggsjoan@myvuw.ac.nz.

Setting your password

You need to set a password for your student account before you can log in. Do this by:

  • going to our password set-up page
  • entering your username
  • receiving a security code (which we’ll send to your personal email address)
  • entering the security code
  • adding the password of your choice.

Using or forwarding your student email

You’ll use the Outlook app to read email that’s been sent to your student ('my vuw') address. Outlook is one of Microsoft's Office 365 apps, for which you now have a student account.

The University will send official communications to your student email address—so it’s important to check your account regularly. Alternatively, you can set up a forwarding rule in your student email account so that messages are sent on to a personal email address.

Updating contact information

You can see the contact information that the University has for you in the Student Records tool in Pūaha.

It’s a good idea to keep all your contact information (physical address, phone number(s), and personal email address) up to date so you don't miss out on important information.
