Print on campus
Find out how to use the University's printers, how much it costs, and how to top up your printing account.
You can send course materials, assignments, and essays to print from any student computer or any personal device on campus. When you're ready, swipe your student ID card at any printer to get your pages.
How to print
The printers
Multi-Functional Device printers (MFDs) are situated across all campuses for students to print course materials and essays, and to scan and send documents.
How to print
In 2025, we upgraded all our printers and photocopiers across our campuses. To print on the new devices:
- Download UniFlow from your app store or go to the Student Printing Portal
- Once installed, select SecurePrint VUW from the dropdown menu of your printer options when you print something from your device.
- Swipe your University ID on any printer to release your items.
Note that you need to accept the license and account terms and conditions when installing the UniFlow software.
Collecting your printing
Whether you're printing from student computers or from your own device:
- Your print job will be uploaded and held on a server for 10 hours.
- During this time you can collect your print job from any printer on campus that has a card reader attached.
- Swipe your student identity card, and the print job will be released.
Your printing account
Printing charges for students are:
- black and white printing—5 cents per page, per side
- colour printing—10 cents per page, per side
- scanning and emailing—no charge.
Your account needs to be in credit before you can print.
Each trimester, the University subsidises students with a $5 printing credit. This is maintained in a separate wallet. At the start of the trimester, this credit will be added for enrolled students who have paid their fees. If you need to print more than this, you can top up your credit by visiting the Printing funds portal.
Topping up your printing account
You can check your balance and top up your account by using the Printing funds portal, which is accessible from any personal device. There is a 'student printing and balance' icon on the desktop of all student computers.
Who sees your scans and prints
Most of the time, no one will see what you print or scan, however, a small number of university staff have access to the queue and can access prints and scans. This access is for those staff to provide service support, and identify and manage any breach of university policies.
Sometimes we also need assistance from third-party service providers, including Canon, who will have access to your printing and scans.
Printer usage
Your printing and scanning on University systems is subject to our Student Conduct Statute, Acceptable Use of Information System Statute and Privacy Policy.
You must not use our printers or scanners for anything illegal.
Do not use these printers for any sexually explicit material, unless such use is permitted by the University’s Dealing with Sexually Explicit Material Procedure and is for purposes of the University (i.e. research or study).
We understand that sometimes people use University printers and scanners for minor personal use. That said, please do not use these printers for sensitive documents that could result in loss or harm. For example, do not scan credit cards or passports. If you do so, this is entirely at your own risk, and the University disclaims all responsibility.
