As part of the programme, Nurul Ain volunteered widely both on campus and in the Wellington community. As the Vice President Administration for VicMuslims, Nurul Ain was a key point of communication between the club, the University, and community organisations. She helped organise many events including National Hijab Day, Islamic Awareness Day and Ramadhan Iftar. As a member of the Executive, she played an important role in supporting the wider Muslim and University communities through the aftermath of the terror attacks in Christchurch, demonstrating strength and empathy. That year, the club was awarded a VUWSA Initiative of the Year Club Award.

Nurul Ain further supported students’ emotional and academic wellbeing as an International Buddy, a Student Mentor through the Āwhina Mentoring Programme, and an Ambassador for Wellington University International.

In the community, she volunteered for CubaDupa, and challenged herself to speak in front of public audiences. She was also involved in volunteering with Conservation Volunteers, the Wellington Lantern Festival, and the DCM Bookfair. Alongside her volunteering, Nurul took the opportunity to participate in Wellington Plus workshops on leadership, interviews, time management, goal setting, and LinkedIn.

Nurul says that she took things slowly in her first year as she was still trying to navigate student life and get to know the city and its culture. However, in her second and third year of study, she was more confident in trying new things and getting more involved.

“My experiences on the Wellington Plus Programme have shaped my individual growth as a person and prepared me with the relevant skills that will be crucial for my future.”
