Services include in person appointments, free websites and online services, free call and text helplines from trained and registered helpers. Find out which of the following is best for you.
Mauri Ora—Student health and counselling
Health
Make an appointment with a nurse or GP at Mauri Ora by calling 04 463 5308 or stopping by reception at Kelburn or Pipitea campuses. Appointments are free to students who are registered with Mauri Ora. The team will always see students who present with acute medical emergencies, whether they are registered or not.
After hours medical appointment appointments are available at Wellington Accident and Urgent Medical Centre, 17 Adelaide Road, Newtown.
Counselling
Make an appointment with a counsellor at Mauri Ora. You don’t have to be registered with Student Health to use this service. To find out more, call 04 463 5308.
Urgent on the day appointments called ‘duty counselling’ are available between 1 pm and 4 pm every weekday. For acute mental health crisis after hours, phone Te Haika on 0800 745 477.
Clinical Psychology Centre
The University’s Clinical Psychology Centre is a teaching-based facility for the School of Psychology's clinical psychology programme. We accept a small number of self-referrals from the community, including from students.
The Clinic offers assessment and therapy for a wide range of mild-to-moderate problems that can be led by a clinical psychology trainee. During our initial discussion we will consider whether we are the most appropriate service, or whether another service might be more suitable.
Services outside the University

Free call or text 1737 to speak with a trained counsellor at the national 1737, need to talk? service. You can access this service for yourself and when you are supporting others. This helpline operates 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
Safe to Talk
Safe to Talk is a free service that provides advice, support and confidential information to people who have been affected by sexual harm. Safe to Talk can connect you with further support in your community, and you can use this service anonymously. Call 0800 044 334 or text 4334 for 24/7 access to trained professionals.
Just a Thought
Just a Thought is an online tool that teaches you how to manage thoughts and feelings to help you to feel better. There are lessons, plans and resources available as well as a progress tracking tool. You can access this service at time anywhere on a computer, phone, or other device.
Depression.org
Depression.org provides information, online tools, stories of lived experience and self-help resources for people experiencing anxiety and depression. You can access this service online 24/7 for yourself or others.
The Lowdown
The Lowdown is a website that helps young New Zealanders recognise depression and anxiety as well as build resilience and healthy mental wellbeing. There is information on where to get help, as well as online tools, resources, and stories of lived experience.
Lifeline
Lifeline operates 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Free call 0800 543 352 (0800 LIFELINE) or free text 4357 (HELP) for counselling, help, and support.
