Wana (pronounced one-a) has multiple meanings, including (verb) to bud, shoot (of a plant), sprout, come to life. It also means, to be exciting, thrilling, inspiring, stimulating. As a noun, it is a seedling or young shoot, passion, energy, zest.
Who can take part
Wana is a one‑trimester leadership development experience for curious, community‑minded students who are ready to grow—whether or not you see yourself as a “leader” yet.
This programme supports emerging rangatira from across Victoria University—Te Herenga Waka to build confidence, sharpen their thinking, and develop practical leadership tools. You’ll explore ideas, challenge assumptions, grow your networks, and learn alongside a diverse, cross‑disciplinary group of up to 40 students.

Wana is open to undergraduate students who are in their second year of study or above.
Both domestic and international students are welcome to apply.

You’ll take part in a rich programme of learning and connection throughout Trimester 2, including:
- offsite induction—8 July 10am to 4pm
- fortnightly breakfast sessions with guest speaker
- one evening professional development workshop
- end‑of‑programme graduation dinner
- ongoing opportunities to connect, reflect, and work with your cohort.
Wana is designed to stretch, support, and inspire you—and the time commitment is manageable alongside your studies. There is no homework and no cost to be involved.
