Safety and security in town

Here are some more ideas to help keep yourself safe when out and about in the city.

“Take 10” safe zone

Take 10 is a volunteer service that provides a supportive space for young people to take a break from partying, refuel, recharge and make their way home safely. Medical help is also on offer. You can find Take 10 in Courtenay Place on Friday and Saturday nights.

Safety points

Wellington City Council has installed marked safety points where you can call for help if you are in trouble or worried about something you’ve seen, any time of the day or night. Simply press the button to raise the alarm and operators will coordinate the response.

  • Cuba Mall (near 117 Cuba Street)
  • Te Aro Park (19 Dixon Street)
  • Courtenay/Allen Street (35 Courtenay Place)

Call 111 if the situation is an emergency.

Get home safely

There is safety in numbers, so go home with friends. Stick to well-lit areas and pathways if walking. If you are alone or feel it is unsafe to walk then get an Uber or taxi. Save taxi numbers to your phone.

You can find taxi stands at Wellington Railway Station, on Lambton Quay, and at the corner of Courtenay Place and Taranaki Street. If you are walking home and feel it is no longer safe to continue, find somewhere safe and well-lit if you can—like near shops and street lights—and phone a taxi from there.

During most of the first and second trimesters, hall residents can make use of a free Get Home Safe Van on Friday and Saturday nights, between midnight and 2 am.

Threatening behaviour

If you find yourself in a threatening situation, remove yourself from the situation as quickly as possible.

Threats of violence and injury, as well as stalking, loitering, and harassment are an offence. Note what has happened, find somewhere safe and call 111 to report to Police.

Drink spiking

Always watch your drinks—don’t leave them unattended, or with people you have just met or don’t know. Drink spiking is often used to coerce people into sexually harmful situations.
