Paige Dawber-Ashley

Alumna Paige Dawber-Ashley has made a career of helping others—from managing a Christchurch college to operating her own careers tools and advice business.

Where are you living and what are you doing?

I'm based in Christchurch and currently work in my side hustle Recruit You, which is a career hub for candidates to network, apply for roles, and gain career tools and knowledge to help them advance in their career. I also work as a regional manager for Whitecliffe College, which is a Private Training Enterprise (PTE).

What did you study and why did you choose your degree?

I completed a Bachelor of Commerce and Administration majoring in International Business and Marketing. I chose my degree because I thought it was the best option for me to get into business. I liked how in the first year you could take papers ranging from accounting to management, which I felt gave me more knowledge and helped me select my majors.

What appealed to you about Victoria University of Wellington?

The reputation of Victoria University of Wellington and that of the business school was what appealed to me the most. I also grew up in Wellington and liked the idea that I could stay in the city that I had grown up loving.

What do you wish you had known before applying for your first job?

That it's important to be you. Not only will your education and work experience help you get a role, a big factor is also who you are and if you are a culture fit for the company. So don't be afraid to show your personality and who you are.

What were your plans on leaving the University?

After completing my degree I planned to head overseas to spend time travelling and getting out of my comfort zone. After a year, I headed back to New Zealand to start focusing more on building a career. After working for a few years I decided to start my own business.

What have been your career highlights since graduating?

My career from the outside might look a bit all over the place as I have had roles in various industries. But I love how they taught me different aspects of business and got me to where I am today. Becoming a manager of a PTE and starting my own business have been my biggest highlights so far.

What do you enjoy most about working in your profession?

I love being able to meet and work with a wide range of people with different backgrounds and career journeys.

Best piece of advice you’ve been given?

‘No’ doesn't mean never, it just means not today. This advice has got me through job applications and starting my own business.

If you could say one thing to current students?

Follow opportunities by saying ‘yes’ to things that get you out of your comfort zone. You never know where they might lead you.

What do you want to do next with your career?

I want to continue growing my business and help other people grow their careers.

How has what you learnt at Victoria University of Wellington helped you in your career?

Through my study at the University, my entrepreneurial spirit was awakened and developed. My study gave me the confidence and knowledge to tackle job situations and push myself to grow and want to learn more throughout my career.
