Using images

Find out what limitations apply when including images within your student materials.

You can make a single copy of an image when you are teaching a lesson and the copy is made in preparation or for use in the lesson.

Image limitations in student materials

If you want to make multiple copies of the image available in student materials there will be the following limitations.

Images from hardcopy books and journals in student material

Images from published books and journals can be included in student material so long as they fall with limits of the Copyright Licensing Limited New Zealand (CLNZ) licence and are entered in Talis Aspire to ensure accurate reporting.

You can make:

  • One copy for use in preparing and teaching a course, this is covered under section 44 (1) of the Copyright Act.
  • Multiple copies as long as it fits within the CLNZ licence for hardcopy material.

Images from the internet in student materials

Using images from the internet, see material from the internet. For information on selecting images that can be used freely, see finding open access material.

You can make:

  • One copy for use in preparing and teaching a course, this is covered under section 44 (1) of the Copyright Act.
  • Multiple copies as long as you meet the requirements set out in the material from the internet section.

Material where the publisher has provided the images as teaching resource

This will depend on what you have agreed with the publisher.

You can make:

  • One copy for use in preparing and teaching a course, this is covered under section 44 (1) of the Copyright Act.
  • Multiple copies provided you have approval from the publisher.
