Biotechnology
Bachelor of Science with Honours - in Biotechnology
Prerequisites
Honours candidates must have previously completed a Bachelor of Science (BSc) degree with an average grade of B+ or higher in their 300-level papers.
- BTEC 301
- TECH 302
- At least 30 points from BIOL/BMSC 339, 340, 343, 354, CHEM 305, CHEM 306 (or equivalent courses subject to approval).
exemptions from the BTEC 301 and TECH 302 prerequisites may be available for students who have demonstrated capability in other relevant molecular biology and/or chemistry courses
Course requirements
- BTEC 435
- 75 points from BTEC 401–479, BIOL, CHEM or MBIO 400–480 to include at least 15 points from BTEC 401–479
- BTEC 489 – Research Project
Note: one or two courses may be substituted with other 400-level science courses, with approval from the Head of School. BTEC 436 is strongly recommended.
Postgraduate Diploma of Science in Biotechnology
This is a one year postgraduate qualification for students wanting a coursework qualification or for those not admitted to BSc(Hons) or MSc Part 1.
Prerequisites
Postgraduate diploma candidates must have previously completed a Bachelor's degree.
Course requirements
- 120 points from BTEC 401–489, 580, BIOL, CHEM or MBIO 400–479 including 30 points from BTEC 401–479
Master of Science in Biotechnology
A Master's degree is a research degree. It consists of two parts and is normally completed in two calendar years. Part 1 (the first year) involves three courses of 30 points each and a research preparation course. Part 2 (the second year) is a full-time research project, leading to a thesis.
Prerequisites
- BTEC 301
- TECH 302
- at least 30 points from BIOL/BMSC 339, 340, 343, 354, CHEM 305, CHEM 306 (or equivalent courses subject to approval)
Master's candidates must have previously completed a Bachelor of Science (BSc) degree with an average grade of B+ or higher in their 300-level papers. Prospective students must also agree a thesis topic with a supervisor before enrolment in the programme.
Course requirements
Part 1
- BTEC 435
- 75 points from BTEC 401–479, BIOL, CHEM or MBIO 400–480 to include at least 15 points from BTEC 401–479
- BTEC 580 – Research Preparation
Part 2
- BTEC 591 – Thesis
PhD in Biotechnology
The PhD is the highest degree offered by the School of Biological Sciences. It is a research degree culminating in a thesis and usually takes three to four years of full time study to complete.
