Superconducting computers, semiconductors, magnets, and other fun with physics
Professor Ben Ruck, from the School of Chemical and Physical Sciences, presents his inaugural lecture.
Professor Ruck describes his adventures in condensed matter physics, which have recently led him to seek ways to help enable next-generation ultra-fast computing based on superconductors. This technology promises to greatly reduce the environmental impact of our online activities. But new materials with exotic properties are needed to make the components that will allow these systems to work. He describes his work on an exciting candidate set of materials, the amazing, rare-earth nitrides.
This is Professor Ruck's inaugural lecture as Professor of Physics at Te Herenga Waka—Victoria University of Wellington.
