Sailing in another direction: Researching vocabulary outside comfort zones

Professor Averil Coxhead discusses how her collaborative vocabulary projects have influenced her research in linguistics and applied language.

This talk is inspired in part by a line from Allen Curnow’s poem ‘Landfall in Unknown Seas’: “Simply by sailing in a new direction, you could enlarge the world.” Similarly, research in vocabulary studies can move in new directions and result in surprising gains.

In this lecture, Professor Averil Coxhead from the School of Linguistics and Applied Language Studies discusses her collaborations on vocabulary for Specific Purposes in new contexts and in languages other than English and the Language in Trades Education (LATTE) project. She shares how these collaborations have influenced her approaches to research, expanded her horizons, and moved her well outside of her comfort zone.
