At the University of Edinburgh, she focused on analysing cultural diversity in children’s literature in translation. At Te Herenga Waka—Victoria University of Wellington, she expanded this research by delving into young adult literature (YAL). Mariel’s thesis aims to bring awareness the lack of cultural representation in translated YAL and the need for more diversity in translation in general.
