SLC Research Seminar Series - Dr Sadat Muaiava

This presentation examines how social media is reshaping the use of gagana Sāmoa, creating new opportunities for connection, identity, and language renewal. Using the concept of Vaogagana, the relational space within and between language, it considers how digital platforms support cultural expression, new forms of language use, and community building. It also raises important questions about language change, code switching, and maintaining vā fealoaloa‘i (respect) in online environments. Overall, the discussion shows that social media is influencing gagana Sāmoa in significant ways, offering meaningful opportunities for growth while also presenting challenges that must be carefully managed to protect the language and its cultural foundations for future generations.

Le’ausālilō Dr Sadat Muaiava is Programme Director of Va‘aomanū Pasifika in the School of Languages and Cultures. His teaching and research centre on Gagana Sāmoa, Pacific languages, culture, identity, and education, with a strong focus on language preservation and revitalisation. He is the author of Lāuga: Understanding Samoan Oratory (Te Papa Press, 2022) and is completing his second book, ‘Ie Toga: Samoan Fine Mats and Cultural Exchange. Dr Muaiava works closely with communities across Aotearoa, the Pacific, and internationally to promote gagana Sāmoa, cultural knowledge, and intergenerational transmission.
