Pramishka Madurapperuma began her health career as a doctor in Sri Lanka, but when she set her sights on a management health role, she realised she needed a qualification to help her achieve her goals.

“I had a few administrative roles in hospitals but couldn’t progress my career because I didn’t have a qualification in the field of health leadership and management.”

Pramishka began to research universities that she wanted to study with, having previously completed a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery in China.

Victoria University of Wellington’s Postgraduate Diploma in Health with Health Leadership and Management specialisation was exactly what she was looking for.

“No other University I looked at offered this programme, and Victoria University of Wellington is a top ranked university for research, which really solidified my choice.”

Once she arrived in New Zealand, Pramishka found that the city and the University were a welcoming place.

“There are so many different cultures in Wellington, I feel like I fit in, and the support from the lecturers and administrative staff has been so amazing.”

She has also enjoyed everything that living in Wellington has to offer.

“If you love nature, this is definitely the place for you. You have the city, nature, and the beach right next to each other – I love it!”

Once she completes her Postgraduate Diploma, Pramishka hopes to progress through the programme pathway into a Master of Health degree.

“Ultimately I want to lead and manage within a hospital, and this programme is definitely helping me to reach my goals.”
