Research Centres

The School of Geography, Environment, and Earth Science works closely with three research centres at Te Herenga Waka—Victoria University of Wellington.

The School maintains strong research and teaching links with the internationally recognised Antarctic Research Centre here at Te Herenga Waka—Victoria University of Wellington. We also work closely with the New Zealand Climate Change Research Institute on campus.

Antarctic Research Centre

The Antarctic Research Centre is a centre of research excellence within the Wellington Faculty of Science and reports directly to the Dean of Science. It is located with the School of Geography, Environment, and Earth Sciences (SGEES), with which it shares some academic staff and facilities.

The Centre also contributes to both undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and research supervision in sedimentology, glaciology, paleoclimatology, and Antarctic affairs.

New Zealand Climate Change Research Institute

The New Zealand Climate Change Research Institute was established in 2008 by the University with the aim of developing interdisciplinary research into all aspects of climate change. In particular, the Institute recognises a need to better integrate social and natural sciences, and for independent analyses of response options as non-prescriptive inputs to New Zealand policy.

The Institute of Geophysics

The Institute of Geophysics coordinates research in geophysics, meteorology, and tectonics within SGEES and the wider Science faculty of the University.
