Enrol
Complete our enrolment form to access medical services. Both domestic and international students can register as patients.
To access our medical services, you need to have enrolled with Mauri Ora—Student Health and Counselling as your primary healthcare provider. If you're not enrolled, you can still access some services, including counselling.
Before you make an appointment to see a counsellor, you'll need to complete and submit our counselling intake form online, whether you're an enrolled patient or not.

Issues
If you are having issues sending your forms or have special circumstances, call us at 04 463 5308 or email us at mauriora@vuw.ac.nz.
Identification requirements
You need to provide photo ID—a form of official identification that includes a photograph of yourself. Acceptable forms of photo ID include:
- A copy of your driver’s license, Kiwi Access Card or passport (for New Zealand citizens or residents).
- A copy of your passport or Kiwi Access Card and proof of your visa, such as a scanned copy of your Resident Visa or Work Visa/Permit (for non-New Zealand citizens or residents).
Enrolling in person
You can also enrol in person at one of our locations. Please bring your photo ID with you to present to our reception staff.
Timing
We recommend enrolling as soon as you can, before your first appointment. For domestic students, early enrolment means that we'll have enough time to receive your medical records from your previous doctor and gain an understanding of your medical history before you arrive.
During the beginning of each trimester, we receive a large volume of enrolment forms. We work through these as quickly as we can, but there may be a delay in response. Thank you for your understanding and we appreciate your patience.
Who can enrol with us
Domestic and Manaaki/ELTO students
Enrolling with us means that Student Health will become your primary medical practice, and your general consultations at our clinics will be free.
Once enrolled, you can still attend any other general practice as a casual patient. This means that you can still see your family doctor when you're at home during the holidays.
If you're unsure whether you're eligible to enrol, there is a list of categories on the second page of the form. You need to be able to tick one of categories A to K.
International students
All international students studying at Victoria University of Wellington that currently live in New Zealand can access Student Health.
As an international student, you may have some or all of your medical costs covered by an insurance provider such as Studentsafe. If you're not sure whether or not this applies to you, contact the International Student Experience team for further information or ask us when booking your next appointment.
Some international students are eligible to register with Student Health for publicly funded healthcare. You're eligible to register if you hold one of the following:
- a NZ Development/Manaaki Scholarship (formerly NZAid)
- a Commonwealth Scholarship
- a resident visa or permanent resident visa.
In some cases, a work visa may also make you eligible. Contact Student Health's main reception or International Student Experience to find out if this is an option for you.
If you are not eligible for publicly funded healthcare, you can still choose to register to have Student Health as your primary healthcare provider while you study.
Casual (non-enrolled) patients
If you're not enrolled with us we can’t provide you with many of our services. As a casual (unenrolled) patient, you can still access:
- our counselling services (free of charge)
- aegrotat and AAA (Alternative Accessible Agreements) application appointments during the exam period (free of charge)
- flu vaccination (free of charge)
- Gardasil vaccinations (free in some circumstances).
We will always see students who present with acute medical emergencies, whether they are enrolled or not.
