Specialists
We offer some specialist services, and will refer you to external specialists as needed. Some types of healthcare specialists don't require a referral from us.
You will need a referral from a general practice doctor before you can book an appointment to see our internal specialists.
If you have been referred to see a specialist, you need to book the appointment yourself as we're unable to do it for you.
You will also need a referral before you can make an appointment for some specialists that are not based at Student Health, for example, to get an X-ray or an ADHD assessment by a psychiatrist.
Specialists within Student Health
There are two types of specialist who offer appointments at our Kelburn practice—dermatologists and endocrinologists.
You will need to get a referral from one of our doctors before you can make an appointment to see one of these specialists, and you need to be enrolled as a patient at Mauri Ora.
Endocrinologist
An endocrinologist helps people with diabetes with their blood sugar control, provides guidance on insulin and medication use, and monitors their long-term health to prevent complications. Endocrinology is a referral-only service, so you will need to start by seeing one of our doctors.
Specialists outside Student Health
Our doctors will refer you as needed to external specialist services such as radiology and psychiatry. You can make your own arrangements to see a dentist, optometrist, or physiotherapist—we don't offer these services and you don't need a referral from a doctor.
Radiologist
Your doctor will refer you to a radiology provider if they think you need an X-ray, ultrasound, or other scan.
Psychiatrist
You can make your own appointment with a private psychiatrist, but you will need a referral from a doctor in order to get an ADHD assessment by a psychiatrist.
Physiotherapist
We don't offer a physiotherapy service, and you don't need a referral to make your own appointment with a physiotherapist. The Physio Spot runs student clinics on our Kelburn campus, as well as at their other locations in Wellington. You can make an appointment via the their website or call them on 0800 842 749. You don't need to be enrolled at Mauri Ora to book an appointment.
Optometrist
We don't offer an optometry service, and you don't need a referral to make your own appointment with an optometrist. Victoria University of Wellington students receive discounted rates at Specsavers and Matthews Eyewear.
Dentist
We don't offer a dentistry service, and you don't need a referral to make your own appointment with a dentist. You can receive discounted rates at Wellington Dentists.
