ADHD referrals

Find out how we can help you with attention deficit disorder (ADHD), and about the process for getting a formal diagnosis and accessing stimulant medication.

Referral for an ADHD assessment

In order to be formally diagnosed with ADHD, you need to get a referral to see a psychiatrist. At Mauri Ora, this is a two step process:

  1. Start by booking a 60-minute appointment with a nurse, who will go through your medical history with you and set up screening tests which may include blood tests and an ECG.
  2. You will then have a 30-minute appointment with a doctor or nurse practitioner. They will further assess you, suggest ways to manage your symptoms, and make a referral for you to see a psychiatrist if that is appropriate.

After our comprehensive in-house assessment, we can write a referral letter for you to use to make an appointment with your chosen psychiatrist. You may be waiting several months to meet with your psychiatrist.

You can also book in to see our Health Improvement Practitioner or Health Coach to discuss lifestyle strategies.

Bringing stimulant medication into New Zealand

You cannot import stimulants into New Zealand yourself. You can bring a maximum of four weeks supply with you in your luggage. You should make sure you are carrying a copy of the original prescription from your specialist or physician, as well as an accompanying letter from your specialist or physician stating that you have been prescribed this medicine to help manage your condition.

Obtaining a prescription in New Zealand

There is a legal requirement for you to see a New Zealand-registered psychiatrist for assessment, endorsement, and advice before you can continue your prescription or have your prescription changed.

To avoid delays in getting your medication, ask your regular clinician to send a referral letter to a private psychiatrist in New Zealand. This letter should be sent at least three months before you arrive in New Zealand. You can use the list of psychiatrists below to find a suitable private psychiatrist.

Once a New Zealand psychiatrist has recommended that you receive treatment, your care path will be the same as domestic, Manaaki, and ELTO students.
