Victoria University of Wellington Women’s Futsal team with medals, celebrating winning the 2019 tournament

Tertiary sports tournaments

Our students compete in a range of university sports tournaments across New Zealand.

The University & Tertiary Sport New Zealand Championships see New Zealand’s universities and tertiary institutions go head-to-head. Tournaments are held in a range of sports across the year and trials are open to all Victoria University of Wellington students. We aim to select our top sportspeople and have our strongest teams representing the University.

Points from each tournament accumulate toward an overall tally and champion institution each year. Success at some tournaments can lead to international opportunities.

There are costs associated with travelling and competing in these events and these are communicated to players as soon as possible. Students and teams are encouraged to fundraise.

2020 events calendar

As a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, University and Tertiary Sport NZ (in conjunction with NSO partners) have cancelled the National Tertiary Championship events in the following sports: rowing, 3x3 basketball, futsal, hockey 5s, volleyball, table tennis, basketball 5x5, and netball.

The following National Tertiary Championship events will run in Trimester 2:

  • National Tertiary Ultimate Championship—Ilam Fields, University of Canterbury, Christchurch, 29–30 Aug
  • National Tertiary Badminton Championship—Counties Manukau Badminton Association, 22–23 Aug

There will be no awarding of the overall National Tertiary Championship Shield in 2020.

We understand that the cancellation of National Tertiary Championships in their current format is disappointing for many students.

Additional sports and alternative event models are currently being explored which are likely to include a range of different sports being played on university campuses.
