Sports league conditions

Read the conditions of play for the University Recreation social sports leagues—including conduct, defaults system, eligibility, finals and refund processes.

Conduct

University Recreation’s social sports leagues aim to be a fun, enjoyable sporting experience for all involved. The leagues provide an opportunity to get active in a social, friendly environment. While healthy competition is encouraged, this should not be at the expense of these goals and it’s everyone’s collective responsibility to contribute towards creating a positive playing experience.

Players and teams must compete and conduct themselves in a spirit of fair play and should accept officials’ decisions without gesture or argument. Overly aggressive play, violence and foul language are not tolerated, and any incidents of this nature will be dealt with seriously. Consequences can include the withdrawal of specific players or a whole team from games/the league, without a refund. Any players (or spectators) who are intoxicated will not be allowed to play and will be asked to leave the facility.

Defaults

It is expected that teams are able to play every week and defaults should be avoided wherever possible. If your team does need to default, you must contact University Recreation with at least one day’s notice. Last minute defaults must be communicated via phone, not email, and are counted as no-shows.

No-shows will not be tolerated; any team who does not show up for their game will be given a warning and repeat offenders will be removed from the league without a refund.

Scheduling

The schedule for round-robin matches (rounds 1-7) will either be emailed to team captains or available to view online on the draws/ results page. If you would like a copy of the season schedule and have not yet received it, email the Sports team at sports@vuw.ac.nz. Finals rounds (rounds 8-9) will be determined based on standings and results from previous matches.

Teams must be available to play in any time slot during the league they enter. We will do our best to accommodate one-off requests, but if you can only play during specific times of a given league (e.g., you would not be able to field a team during an earlier game slot) you will unfortunately not be able to register for that league.

Divisions

Depending on their size, we may split some leagues into two divisions. If this is required, we may therefore ask teams to give themselves a rating between 1-10 (1 being more social and 10 being more competitive). Please note these divisions will be entirely dependent on team entries/self-ratings and we cannot guarantee the makeup of any divisions. Irrespective of division, the emphasis of these leagues is on fun, enjoyment and a social atmosphere.

Disputes/ Complaints

The referees decision during the match are final, and cannot be disputed with our sports team. However, if you believe that the score has been incorrectly entered into the results, please contact the Sports team via email at sports@vuw.ac.nz within 48 hours of results being released.

We take all complaints and issues of conducts seriously. If you believe that individuals from an opposing team have not met the standards of conduct outlined above, please reach out to the Sports team via email with a description of the conduct in question.

Eligibility

Players must be 16 years or over to participate in the leagues.

Players must have played two games during pool play to be eligible to play during finals rounds. The exception to this is if both teams agree that a fill-in player can be used. In this case, the fill-in player can play and the result of the game will stand.

Withdrawal from a league

On making payment, you are committing to your place in the league. In the event that you decide to withdraw, a refund will only be considered in exceptional circumstances. No refund will be provided if a player or team is removed from a league due to misconduct, no-showing, or regular defaulting.
