Opera Production: A Voyage to the Moon by Offenbach

Classical Performance students from the New Zealand School of Music – Te Kōkī present four performances of Jacques Offenbach's delightful comic opera A Voyage to the Moon, directed by Sara Brodie with musical direction by Kathryn Mosley.

Inspired by this year's space exploration milestones, including NASA's Artemis II mission, this production celebrates Offenbach's imaginative 1875 opera, which was a sensation in Paris, running for an impressive 185 consecutive performances during its first run. Loosely based on Jules Verne's novel From the Earth to the Moon, A Voyage to the Moon takes audiences on a adventure filled with fantastical lunar landscapes, eccentric characters, and Offenbach's trademark comedic twists!

Directed by Sara Brodie, who also led last year's fantastic production of L'enfant et les sortilèges, the opera features vocal numbers performed in French with English surtitles. The spoken dialogue is presented in English, bringing the comedy vividly to life for contemporary audiences.

This production showcases the talents of students across the Classical Performance programme, with NZSM voice students performing all roles and in ensembles, and the NZSM piano students taking part as rehearsal pianists (répétiteurs) and playing for the performances. Musical direction is provided by Head of Collaborative Piano Kathryn Mosley, and the production is coordinated by Head of Classical Voice Jenny Wollerman.
