Q&A with Pasquale Orchard, 3rd Year Classical Performance Vocal Major

What’s the best concert you’ve ever been to and why?

There are too many to count! A standout concert was seeing one of my kiwi idols Kiri Te Kanawa  perform in Wellington. Equally impressive was Renée Fleming performing at the MFC. Having listened to these two greats on CD from an early age and then experiencing them both live on stage is an unforgettable experience!

What are your non-musical hobbies?

I love to teach! I teach ballet, jazz, hip-hop and tap, it is amazing to have a job that doesn't feel like a job! I also love to go shopping with my friends, its a great way to unwind from uni study.

Who is your favourite musician and why?

Cecilia Bartoli. I know she is a controversial performer as she is extremely dramatic, however, I love her performance style. Bartoli communicates a story whilst drawing in her audience. Bartoli is unique, memorable and charming, all things I strive to be as a performer.

At which store would you like to max-out your credit card?

David Jones! Think of all the makeup and shoes!

What instruments can you play?

My main instrument is my voice, but I also play classical piano and violin. I can also whistle higher than I can sing…does that count as an instrument?

What was the last thing you ate?

Noodles….. Noodles are life.

Do you have any strange phobias?

Broccoli. Tiny green trees, nope, nope and nope. Plus I associate broccoli with bronchitis, and as a singer that is my worst nightmare!

If you could learn to do anything, what would it be?

Learn how to make my legs longer? Man I would love to be tall!

What songs/ pieces would be on the soundtrack to your life?

Oh now this is a good question! I think I would want a dramatic instrumental soundtrack! Not that my life isn't packed full of drama already!

Where are your favourite places to spend time at in Wellington?

When I am not in the practice rooms my friends and I love to eat out in the centre of town, the markets are always buzzing with a fantastic energy!
