Profile
Bevan Marten completed an LLM at the University of Cambridge as a Commonwealth Scholar, followed by a doctorate at the Max Planck Institute for Comparative and International Private Law in Hamburg. His primary research interest is in maritime law, particularly those aspects of the field where domestic and international law interact. Bevan has published a monograph on Port State Jurisdiction and the Regulation of International Merchant Shipping (Springer, 2014) as well as Maritime Law in New Zealand (Thomson Reuters, 2016). From 2018 Bevan will be working on a project supported by the Royal Society’s Marsden Fund on “Judging the Commerce of Empire: International Law and the British Court of Admiralty 1798-1875”. In addition to maritime law Bevan has taught in the areas of tort law/ACC, property law, private law/obligations, and insurance law.
Bevan is a partner at the Wellington firm of Izard Weston.
