New Faculty Club and Law Students' Society Presidents honours board unveiled
The new Law Faculty Club and Victoria University of Wellington Law Students’ Society (VUWLSS) honours board was unveiled at a ceremony held on 23 November.
Alumni travelled from as far as Auckland to attend the unveiling of the honours board, which recognises nearly 100 years of past presidents from The Law Faculty Club and VUWLSS. The Law Faculty Club was established in 1930 and the name was changed to the Victoria University of Wellington Law Students’ Society in the 1980s.
Around 25 past presidents and their executive committee members mingled and reminisced with the 2026 executive committee. The attendees heard speeches from Hannah Bautista, the 2026 president of VUWLSS, Dean of Law Professor Geoff McLay, and Sir David Carruthers, the most senior past Chair in attendance.
Student groups have a long history with the Faculty, serving as a much-appreciated link between the Faculty and students.“This board reminds us that our Faculty’s strength has always come from its students,” says Professor McLay. “Each president represented here helped shape the culture, camaraderie, and leadership that makes our law school what it is today.”
Manraj Rahi came up with the idea of celebrating those who had served before him during his 2022 presidency. “The Law Faculty student body have made a massive contribution to the University since its inception," says Manraj. "VUWLSS itself has played a pivotal role in setting the culture and supporting fellow students, so it’s a real joy to see this service recognised and commemorated. I’m proud to be included on a list alongside such impressive people!"
The board is located along with other student honours boards in the corridor leading to the Student Common Room on the ground floor at Old Government Buildings. Alumni are welcome to view the board. Please contact Victoria Beckett to arrange a viewing.
The Faculty would like to extend its deepest appreciation to alumna Yvonne Chan, who generously offered to allocate the interest from her endowment to support this new initiative.
