Data Science

Data Science graduates bring their unique blend of mathematical, statistical and computer science skills to solve problems in a wide variety of work contexts.

Data is connected to all aspects of life. Data Science is a multidisciplinary field that uses scientific methods, processes and algorithms to produce knowledge and insights from all forms of data. Data Science graduates have critical thinking and analytical skills combined with numerical abilities and capabilities in algorithm design, coding and using database software. They use these skills to source, analyse and critically query the huge amounts of data that can now be sourced via exponentially growing technologies. They then communicate what the data is telling us with an eye for ethical, legal and social requirements and user needs and trends.

Data Science students also develop skills in project implementation, research, problem solving, report writing and presentation.

Roles and career pathways

An undergraduate qualification with a Data Science major can lead to statistical or data analyst. Data Science can complement any other area of study such as Computer Science, Maths, Biological Sciences, Chemistry, Geography or Environmental Science.

A postgraduate qualification in Data Science leads more directly into senior specialist data scientist roles and onto leadership roles such as project manager, business intelligence lead or senior data analyst. Some graduates with an entrepreneurial drive and business experience start their own companies in data analysis, business consulting or sustainability.

Where Data Science graduates work

Data scientists bring their unique mathematical, technical and analytical skills combined with a knowledge of business intelligence to business management consultancies, government data units, policy divisions, the government intelligence community, data agencies, technology companies or start-ups. They can also work in teaching, both secondary and tertiary, and in scientific research. Recent Data Science graduates work in organisations such as:

Build relevant skills and experience

Part-time work and volunteering during study all increase job prospects. Several statistics and data science organisations offer internships, either informally or through established programmes. The Analytics and Research in Government internship programme places interns alongside data analysts in a range of government organisations and offers an opportunity to gain an insight into how data supports government policy and programmes. Women in Data Science New Zealand (WIDSNZ) aims to promote women pursuing a career in data science. WIDSNZ offers a scholarship to current undergraduate or postgraduate students. The WFHSS Internship course run by the Wellington Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences helps develop leadership skills and provides practical workplace experience for students of all disciplines. Programmes such as Wellington Plus and Wellington International Leadership Programme (WILP) offer opportunities to gain diverse volunteer and leadership experience.

Make career connections

The School of Maths and Statistics holds activities throughout the year, including a Maths and Statistics Careers in Focus event, which provide students with the opportunity to connect with alumni and employers in private sector data science analytical companies and government departments. The New Zealand Data Science and Analytics Forum hosts regular events and professional development opportunities. Both organisations offer student membership. The Alumni as Mentors programme for final-year students also enhances your connections and employability in a range of fields while studying.
