I have always been into computers and new ‘techy’ gadgets, so straight out of high school I was keen to study something that would gel with my interests in technology. I enrolled in a degree in Network Engineering. One trimester in, I went along to pass my time in a mate’s Marketing lecture and I was so intrigued with the content that by the end of the lecture, I wanted to find a way I could carry on pursuing my interests in tech while also diving deeper into the world of marketing. By the start of the second trimester, I had found the perfect combination and changed to a Commerce degree majoring in Information Systems and Marketing.

There were a lot of things I enjoyed during my time at university. One of them was the different perspectives that different lecturers had on topics and the opportunities they provided for the students to learn for themselves, explore, and challenge these viewpoints. It’s all about broadening your mind. I enjoyed those opportunities because you get out in the working world and find that it’s those extra things you did to expand your thinking while studying that help set you apart and allow you to continue to do beautiful work every day.

At postgraduate level, I continued with Information Systems. This plus my Marketing studies gave me a good balance of skills and knowledge that allowed me to find ways to continually improve systems and processes. Since uni, I have held business analyst roles and most recently have been steering my career towards my passion for delivery and people leadership in product ownership and platform management roles. I can say that the foundational knowledge I gained from my studies in Information Systems and Marketing have contributed a lot to my approaches in all of these roles, which, in addition to an approach of continuous learning and having a growth mindset, have allowed me to lead effectively.
