About
Ingrid Horrocks is an essayist, poet, fiction writer, and literary critic. Her fiction debut, All Her Lives: Nine Stories (Te Herenga Waka University Press), published in Australia by UQP, won the Jann Medlicott Acorn Prize for Fiction at the 2026 Ockham New Zealand Book Awards.
Her other creative books include two collections of poetry, an eco-memoir, Where We Swim (THWUP, 2021), also published in Australia by UQP, and a travel book, Travelling with Augusta, 1835 and 1999 (THWUP, 2003), which was translated into Italian. Her essays and stories have appeared in Lithub, The Ninth Letter, The Sydney Review of Books, The Spinoff, Landfall, The Australian, The Big Issue and the Guardian. With Cherie Lacey, she co-edited the collection, Extraordinary Anywhere: Essays on Place from Aotearoa New Zealand (THWUP, 2016), and with Tina Makereti, she co-chaired the steering committee for the international festival for nonfiction writing, NonfictionNOW 2021.
As a critic, she has published a literary history, Women Wanderers and the Writing of Mobility (Cambridge University Press, 2017), edited or co-edited books of the Romantic poetry of Charlotte Smith and the travel writing of Mary Wollstonecraft, and published articles on contemporary and historical writing from Aotearoa New Zealand.
Ingrid has been a Commonwealth Scholar at the University of York, has a PhD from Princeton University, and was formerly a Professor of Creative Writing and English at Massey University. In 2024 she was the Kaituhi Tarāwhare CNZ Writer in Residence at the IIML and in 2025 she was awarded an International Residency at Varuna Writers Centre in the Blue Mountains.
In 2026 she convened one of our MA workshops, joining Kate Duignan and Tina Makereti. We are delighted that she will return as a workshop convenor for 2027, joining Kate and Chris Price.
