Student Essay Competition—The Round Table Journal

The Round Table: The Commonwealth Journal of International Affairs (the UK’s oldest IR journal) invites essays from any social science or or humanities discipline, on the suggested topics below or others of significance to the contemporary Commonwealth, or a region or country within the Commonwealth.
The piece of work can be written specifically for the competition or be based on an essay or part of a dissertation. However, on submission it should be capable of being read as a stand-alone piece of work and it should not have been published, or submitted for publication, elsewhere.
The Hodson Prize is an annual award given by The Round Table in memory of the journal’s late Editor, Harry Hodson, and to mark his association with the journal for nearly 70 years.
The prize is awarded for a written piece of work by an undergraduate or postgraduate student, or anyone who has graduated recently, under the age of 30. The essay should be between 1,500 and 2,000 words in length.
The prize has two components:
- Publication of the winning article in The Round Table.
- A cash award of £1,000.
Submission Information
Topics can explore, but are not limited to, questions such as:
- Does the Commonwealth remain relevant?
- Should the Commonwealth promote human rights and good governance?
- Will the Commonwealth fill the gap caused by Brexit?
- Are Commonwealth small states influencing the climate change debate?
- How effective are Commonwealth states in addressing issues such as health security, gender equality, or ethnic violence?
