Join a community of scholars

We offer a vibrant postgraduate community of scholars who work together through teaching, research, and supervision.

In our weekly postgraduate student seminars and workshops, PhD and MA students present current research work. Workshops discuss topics relevant to the craft of being an historian.

Since 2006 our postgraduate students have organised an annual two-day New Historians’ Conference, the first such conference in New Zealand that showcases postgraduate research in History. The conference usually convenes in September or October, each year. Please contact newhistorians@vuw.ac.nz for details. For information about past conferences, please contact HPPI@vuw.ac.nz.

There are regular staff seminars presented by those in the History programme as well as by visiting historians.

Conference details and seminars are provided in the School’s Events page.

We provide all enrolled PhD and MA students with office space and occasional tutoring, marking, or research assistance work. The Wellington Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences provides some funding to help with research costs.
