PhD Working Title: Hidden Dragons: Chinese Labour and Enterprise in New Zealand, 1860s–1920s
Guosheng is from Guangdong, China. He studied Chinese history in Chengdu and Shanghai for seven years. With a strong interest in Pacific history, he applied to the doctoral program at Te Herenga Waka.
His doctoral thesis will examine the historical development of Chinese labour and enterprise in New Zealand from the 1860s to the 1920s. This study will show how Chinese immigrants in New Zealand promoted political reform and economic development and will describe their roles and contributions in the Pacific world.
