Profile

PhD Thesis Working Title: History of Indian Food in New Zealand from the 1880’s to the 2000’s

Leanne has always held an interest in Society, Culture, and History, and was hoping to assimilate all of these subjects into her research work going forward as well. This is why, for both her Undergraduate and Master's research projects, she selected topics that intrinsically dealt with History, Society and Culture and how they have developed over time. With an added interest in Food and Food History and the importance it plays in shaping culture and society, this was the research area she selected in order to pursue her Doctoral studies in.

Hailing from India, a country known for its rich food culture, Leanne intends to use food as a medium to understand the way New Zealand and India’s unique cultures are linked with each other. Through her study, Leanne aims to understand the impact of Indian migration on New Zealand’s food culture and cuisine, its gradual change in time with what is considered to be ‘Authentic Indian Food’ in New Zealand, and if New Zealand’s cuisine has also had an impact on Indian cooking in the country.
