Dr Marnie Lloydd is an experienced legal advisor and humanitarian professional. At the Faculty of Law, where she is also Director of Postgraduate Studies and Co-Director of the New Zealand Centre for Public Law, she specialises in international law related to armed conflict and humanitarian action, including protection of civilians and forced migration. She has held visiting fellowships at the Peter McMullin Statelessness Centre (Melbourne) and Copenhagen University School of Law, and has been invited twice by Harvard Law School as a Global Scholar. She is also currently a Senior Researcher with the Geneva Academy of IHL & Human Rights, Senior Research Associate with the South African Research Chair in International Law at the University of Johannesburg, and Visiting International Professor at the Institute for International Law of Peace and Armed Conflict (IFHV), Ruhr University Bochum.
Marnie’s work builds on fifteen years in the international humanitarian sector, primarily working with the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) (Ethiopia, DRC, Chad, Sri Lanka, Afghanistan and Middle East region). She is admitted as a Barrister and Solicitor of the High Court of New Zealand. In 2022, Marnie was recognised as a “Women Leader in Law” by New Zealand’s Borrin Foundation. She chairs New Zealand’s National IHL Committee, sits on various editorial boards including Voelkerrechtsblog and the Asia-Pacific Journal of IHL, and is a member of the Council of the Australian and New Zealand Society for International Law (ANZSIL).

Dr Julija Sardelić is Director of the Migration Studies programme and Senior Lecturer at the Political Science and International Relations Programme, Te Herenga Waka - Victoria University of Wellington. Her research covers migration and citizenship, with a particular focus on marginalised citizens and (forced) migrants, as well as the question of statelessness. She authored two books, The Fringes of Citizenship (Manchester University Press, 2021) and Refugee Protection Crises and Transit Europe (Springer, 2025), in addition to many other publications on citizenship and migration. Prior to joining Te Herenga Waka - Victoria University of Wellington, she was Marie Skłodowska-Curie Postdoctoral Fellow at the Leuven International and European Studies (University of Leuven, Belgium). Before her Marie Skłodowska-Curie fellowship, she worked at the University of Liverpool, European University Institute and the University of Edinburgh. She was also a visiting fellow at the Centre on Statelessness (University of Melbourne). Besides her academic endeavours, she has almost two decades of experience as a civil society activist working with marginalised communities and migrants (including forced migrants and people at risk of statelessness) in Europe.
