Events
The Chair plays an active role in promoting Malaysian Studies through public lectures, academic events, and scholarly engagement throughout the year.
As an intellectual ambassador for Malaysian Studies, the Chairholder undertakes activities that support the shared objectives of the Ministry of Higher Education Malaysia and Te Herenga Waka—Victoria University of Wellington. This work extends beyond teaching and research within the University and includes collaboration with other faculties, institutions, researchers, and communities throughout New Zealand.
The Chair also contributes to strengthening the long-standing academic relationship between New Zealand and Malaysia, with a particular focus on student mobility, governance, cultural studies, public policy, and regional affairs.
The Saad Lecture
The highlight of the annual events programme is the Saad Lecture, the flagship public lecture of the Chair of Malaysian Studies. The lecture brings leading scholars and thought leaders to Wellington to share insights on issues of importance to Malaysia, Southeast Asia, and the wider region.
The 2026 Saad Lecture will be held on 5 October and presented by Emeritus Basham Professor Anthony Milner, Australian National University.
