Our Mission

The project has the following objectives:

  • conduct research on how stateless populations (and people at risk of statelessness) are protected (or lack protection) in Aotearoa New Zealand
  • improve statelessness protection in Aotearoa New Zealand and initiate statelessness identification and official reporting in NZ, ultimately highlighting the lack of clear research/knowledge about statelessness in NZ
  • provide a cross-disciplinary approach on statelessness combining both legal and political science perspectives
  • theoretically recentre understandings of statelessness (from its narrow legal definition to broader embeddedness in political landscapes) in relation to Aotearoa New Zealand and the Pacific region
  • provide practice-informed scholarship for evidence-based advocacy on statelessness in New Zealand.
