Commerce student Liam Malone was back to his studies today after an outstanding series of performances at the Paralympics in Rio where he broke two world records on the track.

His two gold-medal performances, in the men’s 200m T43/44 and 400m T43/T44, added to the silver he won earlier in the 100m and set new world records to beat previous holder Oscar Pistorius.

The 22-year-old double amputee has been competing in para-athletics for just two years, and his Olympic debut had him hailed as "one of the breakout stars of the Paralympic games".

He's been supported by a number of Victoria Business School staff as he balances the demands of training and studying Marketing and International Business.

One of his lecturers, Dr Michelle Renton from the School of Marketing and International Business, says Liam stands out for his impressive focus.

"His training has taken him to Auckland and the School's staff have worked with him to get him through the stress of studying while training.

"He's very focused and has used that focus throughout the year to combine an extensive study workload with his intensive training schedule throughout the year."

Marketing lecturer Dr Kate Daellenbach says of her student: "Liam's really a 'bring it on' kind of guy. He's been keeping up with the class, viewing lectures remotely and presented a recorded clip from his room, in lieu of an in-person presentation".

"All that while in serious training – you've got to respect that. Plus he's a nice guy, so it's not surprising many in the class have been following his success."

Liam, originally from Stoke near Nelson, studied his first year at University of Canterbury before moving to Wellington in 2014.
