Abstract

It appears to be the case that language teachers normally consider themselves to be the most important contributors to students’ language competence achievement. In fact, there are a number of ways students can learn language outside classroom, and their success is confirmed as results of their engagement with language beyond classroom (LBC). Based on teachers’ adequate or limited understanding and their own beliefs about students’ LBC, they may consciously or unconsciously support or inhibit students’ self-initiated development through their teaching. Therefore, it is important to investigate teacher cognition about students’ LBC, how these beliefs influence their practices in class, and how these factors affect student learning.

This study is hoped to contribute to the literature of LBC practical knowledge of teacher cognition and practices, especially in a specific context that little is known about, Vietnam. Another potential contribution of the study can be that in the context affected by Confucius tradition where the role of teachers is considered dominant, the necessity that teachers accept and support students’ central and independent role in their learning both in and out of classroom raised in this work may bring a new perspective.
