Communication Evaluation and Development Model

Members of the LWP team have been collaborating with workplace practitioners to generate a practical model of Communication Evaluation and Development (CED) which draws both on the results of our analyses of naturally-occurring workplace discourse and on current theories of organisational learning. The CED model moves away from traditional notions of prescribed skills or competencies, towards a more flexible and complex approach to communication, based on the idea of 'reflective practice'. It takes an 'action learning' approach, based on participants observing, reflecting on and evaluating their own particular communication processes in a specific workplace. The results of trialling this process suggest that it can be very effective in a range of different work environments.

The final chapter of Janet Holmes and Maria Stubbe's Power and Politeness in the Workplace outlines the CED in more detail. For more publications on the CED model, please see the Bibliographies section.
