Examination outcomes
A few candidates each year pass the viva with no amendments required. This outcome is rare and indicates that the thesis has met the requirements of the doctoral degree without further changes. The most common outcome is to pass with amendments required. These amendments are classified as either minor, with up to three months to complete them, or major, with up to six months to complete them.
The examiners will provide a document summarising the amendments you need to make. This will be included in your Examination Outcome in Panoho.
The examination committee will recommend one of the following outcomes:
- Pass, with no amendments required.
- Pass, with amendments required. The amendments will be classified as minor or major, and the candidate will be eligible to be awarded the doctoral degree once the required amendments have been completed and approved.
- Refer to the Dean FGR for further consultation. In this case, the Dean FGR will consult with the Chair of the viva and other interested parties, as appropriate, to obtain any additional information needed to determine the outcome of the doctoral examination as a whole.
In most cases, the internal examiner is responsible for checking that the required amendments have been completed. You may need to discuss the amendments with your supervisor/s and/or the internal examiner. You should also check how the internal examiner would like to receive your amended thesis, for example, with tracked changes or with a document outlining how you have addressed each amendment.
If you are working towards a graduation deadline, talk to the internal examiner early about their timeframe for reviewing and approving your amendments.
