Degree completion and conferment
The final steps are to deposit your thesis in the Library and to apply for conferment and graduation.
Step 1 - Supervisor approval for the final version of your thesis/portfolio
If your examination outcome is “pass, subject to minor amendments,” you must complete the required changes and have them approved by your supervisor before making your final deposit.
If your examination outcome did not include amendments, you may still make minor edits, such as formatting adjustments or small corrections, but your supervisor must review and approve the final version. This approval is arranged directly between you and your supervisor and is not completed through Panoho.
After you have deposited your thesis or portfolio, it is rare to be permitted to make any further changes. Any post‑deposit amendments require special approval from the Dean of the Faculty of Graduate Research (FGR). Please ensure all revisions have been completed and approved before you deposit.
Check here for more information about formatting your thesis.
Step 2 - Deposit your thesis/portfolio in the Library
Once you have the final version of your thesis or portfolio, you can deposit it in the library.
When you successfully deposit your thesis or portfolio you will receive a confirmation receipt from the Library. The FGR Exams Team also receives a copy of this receipt and uses it to update your Student Record.
You will lose access to University systems, including Panoho, 28 days after your deposit date (shown on your Library receipt), so make sure you download and save anything you may need before this access ends.
Remember you need to have a personal email address recorded in Pūaha so you continue receiving important University communications, including information about graduation.
Step 3 - Degree Completion form in Panoho
After depositing your thesis or portfolio in the Library, you must submit the Degree Completion form in Panoho.
The FGR Exams Team manually verifies the Degree Completion form against the Library receipt and uses this information to update your Student Record. This includes entering your final grade, confirming your award level, and marking your record as “degree complete.” Because this is a manual process completed during working hours, it may take a few business days—especially during peak periods.
Once the FGR Exams Team has received both your Library Deposit receipt and your Degree Completion form, they will update your Student Record and mark you as “degree complete.” After this, you can apply for conferment and graduation.
Submitting the Degree Completion form will generate your Completion Letter for download.
International students: If you plan to apply for a Post‑Study Work Visa, submit the Online Conferment Application form (see step 4 below) and then email the Graduation Office to request a “degree completion” letter (remember to include your name and student ID) as the Panoho letter does not include your conferment date.
Step 4 - Apply for conferment and graduation
To complete your Master's and formally receive your degree, you need to apply to have your qualification granted by submitting an Online Conferment Application. This form also asks whether you plan to attend a graduation ceremony or not.
If you are aiming to meet a specific graduation or conferment deadline, do not leave this step until the last minute. You can find more information, including deadlines and requirements at Apply to graduate
