Inclusion of publications

Read our information on including publications in your thesis.

Victoria University of Wellington does not offer a “PhD by Publication”, but it is possible to include published work in your doctoral thesis, subject to certain conditions. Please read the guidelines for including publications in a doctoral thesis for more information.

If you have published work in a journal, conference, etc, then you need to confirm that you have the publisher's permission to use that material in your thesis. Normally this is a standard part of the publisher's agreement with you.

When you submit your thesis for examination in Panoho, if you tick that your thesis includes material that has been published or that has been accepted for publication, you will be asked to confirm the following:

  • I contributed at least 50% of the content in each publication and I am the “primary author” of each (i.e., I was responsible primarily for the planning, execution and preparation of the work for publication).
  • The publications report original research conducted by me during my enrolment for this degree.
  • The publications are not subject to any obligations or contractual agreements with a third party that would constrain their inclusion in the thesis.
  • I have followed the University’s guidelines for including publications in a thesis.
  • I have appropriately and fully referenced the published material in my thesis so that the examiners can clearly understand what has been published.
  • I have permission from the publishers to include the work in my thesis (such permission is normally part of the standard agreement signed when the work is submitted for publication).
