Oral examination outcomes

It is very common for examiners to require candidates to make changes to the thesis before it is accepted. The examiners will discuss with you the corrections you need to make and negotiate a timeframe for completing them. They will also provide you with a written report.

The examination committee will recommend one of the following:

  1. Corrections and amendments: that the candidate be awarded the doctoral degree subject to satisfying the conditions set out in the examination report. A timeframe not exceeding six months full-time will be indicated for making the changes; or
  2. Other outcomes: the Dean WFGR will consult with the Chair of the oral and other interested parties (as appropriate) to obtain such additional information as is necessary to determine the outcome of the examination of the doctoral degree as a whole.

In most cases the internal examiner is responsible for ensuring that required corrections and amendments are completed. You may need to discuss how to make the relevant changes with your supervisor(s) and/or the internal examiner, and check how the internal examiner would like to receive these (e.g., with track changes or in hard copy). You should also talk to the internal examiner about their timeframes for signing off on your work, especially if you are concerned about graduation deadlines.
