Doctoral induction

Learn about the mandatory induction programmes for new doctoral students at Victoria University of Wellington.

All doctoral students at Victoria University of Wellington must attend the Faculty of Graduate Research (FGR) induction programme for new doctoral candidates. In the induction sessions, we inform you about the requirements of PhD study and the different policies that govern the degree and offer you the opportunity to network with other new doctoral candidates, pick up vital information and useful tips and strategies.

Doctoral students are encouraged to attend an Induction session within the first 6 months of their doctoral candidature. You must be enrolled in your PhD at the time you attend a session. For those enrolling in a professional doctorate (DMA, EdD, DHlth, DMid and DNurs) it is advisable that they attend an induction session after they have completed their coursework and are starting part 2 of their doctorate.

If you are an international doctoral student, you must also attend the separate international orientation programme provided by Wellington University International. You need to register separately for this event.

FGR offers three induction sessions every year. To participate in an induction session, registration is mandatory.

Here is a list of induction sessions offered in 2024. To sign up, click the session of your choice.
