Appointment of Examiners
Your supervisor is responsible for nominating your examiners. You are not required to take any action in this process. However, this process only can be initiated after your Notice of intention to submit is created and approved by your supervisor and FGR team.
Who will examine your thesis?
In most cases, two examiners will be appointed:
- One internal examiner from the University;
- One external examiner from another New Zealand university or from overseas.
Sometimes two external examiners are appointed
Once your Appointment of Examiners form is approved, you will be notified that the process is complete. However, the examiners’ identities will not be disclosed at this stage. You are not permitted to know who your examiners are until your final grade is released, at which point you will receive their reports. If you do become aware of their identities before then, you must not contact them or discuss your thesis under any circumstances
Master’s by Research Portfolio candidates
If you are completing a Research Portfolio, the process differs slightly:
- Your School Administrator will complete the Appointment of Examiners form on behalf of your supervisor;
- The external examiner may be a professional in a relevant field;
- You will learn who your examiners are at your viva (on-site examination), but the reports will be released only after your final result has been approved by the Associate Dean (Postgraduate Research).
