Pre-Panoho Master’s examination processes

A record of Master’s exams processes used prior to the launch of Panoho and for all students “under examination” outside of Panoho

Panoho, our new research candidate management system launched on 15 October 2025. All students who submitted their Master’s thesis/portfolio for examination before 15 October 2025 were not migrated into Panoho and therefore their examinations will be completed outside of Panoho. Below is a record of the processes used for Master’s by research students “under examination” outside of Panoho.

Thesis submission

Students submitted via email, attaching a number of supporting Word documents (relevant to the appropriate Faculty).

Examiner reports and timeline

Examiners were emailed your thesis/portfolio and asked to submit a written report on your thesis and to recommend a grade to your School Research Committee within four weeks. However, many examiners request an extension to this timeline. Sometimes this can take another month or more to complete.

When both examiners have sent in their documents, the final grade is finalised by your School Research Committee and then approved by your Faculty’s Associate Dean (PGR). Once approved, you will receive your grade and examiners’ reports by email.

This usually happens between three to six months after submission, but it can take longer. If you have not received your result or any communication after six months, email the FGR Exams Team for an update.

Receiving the result

When your result has been approved, you will receive an email containing your reports and notification of your grade and the level of award for your qualification.

If you have passed, this may be subject to making some minor amendments to your thesis. If so, your reports and letter will contain the details of what is required. Your supervisor will oversee these amendments, so work together to ensure they are successfully completed. Some Schools have internal processes that must be followed, so check with the Postgraduate Administrator.

If you are not required to make amendments, you can still choose to make editorial amendments. However, if you make any changes you should ensure that your supervisor has reviewed this version. When you deposit your thesis/portfolio, you will be asked to declare that it is the final version which means that it has been approved by your supervisor on behalf of your School.

Depositing in the Library

When you have your final version, the next step is to deposit your thesis in the University Library. this should be done within three months of receiving your results.

You cannot have your degree conferred or apply for graduation until you have deposited your thesis.

When you successfully deposit, you will receive a confirmation receipt which is also sent to the FGR Exams Team. They use it to process updates to your Student Record, including marking you "degree complete". This is a manual process and may take a couple of business days during busy periods.

You will keep access to University services (including your University email and the Library) until 28 days after you lodge your thesis in the Library. Access to Student Health will depend on when you have paid levies for. You can check this by contacting Student Finance.

Graduation

You need to submit the Online Conferment Application form to have your qualification granted, whether you plan to attend a graduation ceremony or not.

If you are keen to attend a specific graduation ceremony, you must submit your application by the deadline.
