Master's by Thesis

Conduct advanced research and earn a Master’s thesis degree with the Wellington Faculty of Engineering.

A Master’s degree by thesis advances your knowledge in the area of your previous studies, and enables you to conduct a significant piece of independent research (with supervision).

For this degree you will research and write a thesis, usually over 12 months of full-time study (or part-time equivalent). The Faculty of Engineering offers two Master by thesis programmes:

Master of Engineering by Thesis

For this degree you’ll need to have completed a Bachelor of Engineering with Honours. Depending on the topic of your thesis, your degree may be endorsed in Electronic and Computer Systems Engineering, Network Engineering, or Software Engineering.

Master of Science by Thesis

For this degree you’ll need to have already completed an Honours degree or Postgraduate Diploma in Science.

Master’s thesis applications

Applications for Master’s thesis study can be made at any time. You don’t need to find a supervisor before you apply, but we encourage you to learn about our researchers and approach them directly to discuss your project ideas. The final allocation of supervisors will be made by the relevant School, taking into account research interests and available resourcing.

You can also find a list of relevant Postgraduate Coordinators on our Postgraduate Advice page.
