China’s Economy in the Context of Globalization and Regional Integration

A delegation from the Institute of World Economics and Politics at the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences in Beijing visited the China Research Centre on the 25th of August. Professor Ni Yueju, Dr Gao Lingyun and Dr Ma Tao presented three topics for discussion at a roundtable event with scholars, policymakers and business practitioners.

Professor Ni discussed the impact of Japan’s FTA strategy on China with particular reference to the process of economic integration in the region and Chinese views on the ongoing plurilateral negotiations in the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) and the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP).

Dr Ma presented his research on labour market changes and industrial upgrading in East Asia. This explored the impact of global value chains on labour markets in East Asia and the changing role of Chinese companies in these value chains as they engage in a process of industrial upgrading.

Dr Gao then talked about his research on the relationship between firm size and productivity distribution in Chinese companies. This research was based on evidence from Chinese census data.

The presentations were followed by a discussion of views on the process of regional integration, both at the state-to-state level and in terms of value chains in Asia, as well as a more general analysis of China’s economic development and structural transformation in the post 2013 Plenum environment.
