Asia's Security and China's Power

The Centre for Strategic Studies and the New Zealand Contemporary China Research Centre invites you to a presentation entitled Asia's Security and China's Power.
In this seminar, Edward Carr examined the long-term impact of China's emergence as a great power upon security in Asia, in preparation for a special report which will be published by the Economist in early December. He will pay special attention to China's interests in the maintenance of a stable external environment for its own economic development. What happens to that interest when China has achieved a number of its development goals? How can other Asia-Pacific countries work with China to encourage a mutual commitment to that peaceful regional environment? What are the risks and the opportunities? This presentation and the question and answer session that will follow presents an unique opportunity to contribute to the thinking behind a report which is bound to be widely read around the world.
Edward Carr joined The Economist as a Science Correspondent in 1987. After a series of jobs covering electronics, trade, energy and the environment, he moved to Paris to write about European business. In 2000, after a period as Business Editor, he left for the Financial Times, where he worked most recently as News Editor. He returned to The Economist in 2005 as Britain Editor, and was Business Affairs Editor for several years before taking up his appointment as Foreign Editor in June 2009.
